M.Tech in Automotive Electronics

Automotive Dynamics

The aim of this module is to give an overview of the fundamental theories relating to vehicle dynamics of four wheeled ground vehicles.
The module will work from the ground up looking into the role of tyres and suspensions and the impact they have on the vehicle respond. The key areas considered in this module in terms of the vehicle response will focus on the areas of ride and lateral response (handling). The module will discuss fundamental theories as well as basic models to ascertain the typical system responses and give an overview of how design criteria need to be managed in a vehicle set-up.

Embedded Systems Programming

The module aims to provide students with practical experience in the programming of real-time embedded
systems including analysis, design and implementation of appropriate computer programs. Analysis and design will be founded on object-oriented (OO) concepts and use of the Unified Modelling Language (UML). Programs will be implemented on a microprocessor system in an appropriate programming language. The module is intended for students with some programming experience (ideally any of C, C++, Java or similar). There will be a substantial hands-on content involving the programming of a micro controller and incorporating suitable software tools.

Automotive Cybersecurity

This module aims to develop the student's critical knowledge in the field of automotive cybersecurity, which poses a major
challenge to connected and autonomous vehicles. The module addresses the wider challenge of increasing digital and software components on connected platforms, and focusses specifically on threat intelligence and engineering aspects of automotive systems. Issues of policy and personal data are also explored.
Students will engage with the understanding of the complex nature of the challenge with a systematic threat assessment and attack analyses using case studies. This will provide the foundation for further intermediary level investigating testing and design paradigms for assurance, privacy and regulatory issues. The fundamental concepts of cybersecurity will be delivered using presentations and group discussions. Case studies will be used throughout to demonstrate real-life scenarios and give illustrations of how to solve complex problems.

Advanced Automotive Electronics

This module aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills of electronics necessary for students to automotive industry.
This module covers the sensor and measurement theory, communication and information technologies, architecture of electrical and electronics systems used in modern vehicles. The overall aim of the module is to provide students a focused interdisciplinary knowledge that encompasses important elements including sensors and actuators developed for measurement and control of modern vehicles, autonomous systems for environment awareness, CAN bus for fault diagnoses and in-vehicle data communication, Electromagnetic Compatibility and Electronic systems reliability.
Multi-sim simulations are adopted to help students to comprehend the teaching contents and to design basic measurement systems. The simulation including the analysis of characteristics of sensors and measurement systems, noise cancellation of signal, Analog-to-digital conversion. Assessment requires students to apply the concepts and knowledge to design a real measurement project.

Machine Learning & Computer Vision

This module provides students with an introduction to machine learning techniques, the associated concepts and applications.
Machine learning is the process whereby systems learn by identifying structures and patterns within data. Machine learning has proved an important tool in various applications including data mining, games design, diagnosis, natural language processing and image processing. Machine learning covers a broad field of intelligent techniques and their associated algorithms such as data preparation and pre-processing, supervised, unsupervised and semi-supervised learning, classification and clustering, applications of machine learning and future developments. The computer vision component of the module presents image processing and machine vision techniques and algorithms from a machine learning perspective. An emphasis is placed on activity led learning, where students are required to apply the computer vision techniques taught to design solutions to 'real' industrial and research problems. Hand-on exercises will be provided to design, test and display computer vision solutions for particular application areas related to the automotive industry.

Linear Control Engineering

Linear Control Engineering serves to provide an introduction to the underlying control system design tools
which support aspects of Control Engineering encountered throughout the Programme.

MBA in Strategic Engineering Management

Human Resource Management

The purpose of this module is to develop a critical view of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the context of modern
society and modern organisations. The module will review the changing cultural nature of the employment relationship and critically evaluate the potential contribution of HRM to organisational effectiveness and efficiency.

Business Innovation & Sustainability

This module is designed to provide students with the ability to develop and implement business innovation and intrapreneurship
within the appropriate frameworks to comply with future requirements for sustainability. Students will be introduced to and develop firm understanding of the theory, practices and importance of innovation and intrapreneurship focusing mainly on larger multinational organizations. Aspects of sustainability (economic, social, environment) sustainable operations and sustainability challenges will be studied.

Principles of Marketing

The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the principles and practice of marketing.
It will examine marketing's value and purpose across a range of contexts, including the private and public sectors both in a service and global context. The module is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of marketing concepts within a global context, including environmental analysis, buyer behaviour, strategic market segmentation, targeting and positioning, and the design of marketing mixes. Students will need to undertake critical analyses of these concepts by applying them to different marketing contexts.

Engineering Strategic Management

This module introduces students to the management of strategy within an engineering environment.
Increasingly, companies in global markets are competing through manufacturing and to be able to do this, their strategies must support the needs of the market place and be able to provide a competitive advantage.
This module is designed to equip students with the core concepts, frameworks and techniques of strategy analysis, design and management, which will allow them to make better decisions both for their companies and for themselves. The areas of corporate and business strategy are dealt with in a number of different environments, and the module then looks, in more detail, at the design of strategies for the manufacturing function.
The approach is both analytical and practical, and is focused on facilitating the achievement of long term competitive advantage and profitability.

Financial Analysis & Decision Making

This module aims to provide the participants with an understanding of key financial concepts and their application towards
the establishment of a financially sound business. It will equip the participants with sufficient financial knowledge to enable them to evaluate their own decision making in the context of their company's long term strategic development

Lean & Six Sigma tools & techniques

High quality and responsive industry requires the elimination of waste at all levels throughout its processes and systems.
This module reviews the tools and techniques required to identify, analyse and design effective work streams and improve supporting systems. Based on the tools and techniques that have been traditionally used in industry, it will give the student confidence to manipulate and handle data to identify the issues that are causing waste and poor performance. Both Six Sigma and Lean tools and techniques will be used to evaluate current state and develop a vision for the future of improved performance and value added flow. The focus of this module will be on the application of tools and techniques through case studies and industrial scenarios and will identify the benefits to be gained by their successful implementation.
